Whenever I go out for Sushi, the first thing my friends ask me is, “Are you sure you can eat this? What about the soy sauce?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered,” I reassure them, all the while smiling to myself that they always forget my little secret sushi weapon: freshly squeezed lemon juice.
What? Lemon juice? With Sushi? I don’t get it…
I concocted this little recipe for myself several years ago when, after I had placed my order, I realized that the restaurant didn’t carry gluten-free soy sauce. “Oh, hell no!,” I screamed to myself. What in the hell was I going to eat all that sushi with? And I hadn’t indulged in fresh sushi in ages; I couldn’t let the moment pass me by, but what in the hell was I going to do?
I took several sips of water, staring at the lemon being jostled by the ice cubes; everything slowly becoming one.
The next time I saw the waiter, I ordered a ramekin of fresh lemon juice. When he brought it to the table, I immediately stirred in a generous lump of the wasabi and set it aside.
When the sushi arrived, I decided to sacrifice a piece of Maguro to my little experiment. I carefully lifted the piece of sushi between my chopsticks, gingerly dipped it into the lemon juice and wasabi and, and all I can tell you, is you will never look at sushi the same way ever again!
It was far more subtle and far more refreshing than I thought it would be. The lemon juice didn’t overpower the delicate flavor of the tuna, nor did the wasabi obliterate all these delicacies. It was a marriage made in gourmound heaven.
Plus, if you think about it, soy sauce is LOADED with sodium which makes us thirsty when we’re eating, so we consume mass quantities of liquid to dilute the salt. With this sushi alternative, you’re eating considerably less salt, leaving you with more room for dessert…
So remember: LEMON JUICE + WASABI = ULTIMATE SUSHI EXPERIENCE
