FDA Finally Pushes for Tighter GF Labeling

Living the gluten free lifestyle is tricky enough as it is, but to further complicate the simple act of grocery shopping, there are actually gluten free products out there that claim they are gluten free, but aren’t. Fellow gluten free blogger, John Forberger knows this all too well when he nearly died after eating a bag of pretzels that were labeled gluten free, but weren’t. How can this possibly happen? How can manufacturers get away with such eggregious transgressions? It’s so shocking it’s difficult to wrap one’s head around it. But let’s face it. People have a tendency to be lazy unless they are told to behave otherwise and in the case of gluten free labeling, this is especially true. Most businesses that say they are gluten free haven’t been held responsible for the purity of their product because the FDA laws aren’t in place. But not for much longer. Thanks to John and the efforts of 1in133, these shocking moments are hopefully going to become fewer and far between.

At last, the FDA is finally cinching up it’s gluten free belt and making it mandatory that gluten free manufacturers adhere to strict guidelines to avoid cross contamination and insure that gluten free products that say they are, actually are. The new labeling laws will not be in effect until next year, so shop carefully and keep on baking at home when you can.
