Wellness Wednesdays

Root Vegetables

Every Wednesday is Wellness Wednesday here at Blackbird! Each week, local wellness expert and certified acupuncturist Laura Farb, the founder of Jade Lotus Wellness here in Austin, Texas, will give us a seasonal wellness tip so we can have optimal gluten free health each and every day.

WELLNESS TIP OF THE WEEK:

In Chinese medicine, there are five elements in the body: earth, metal, water, wood and fire. Each of these elements needs to be nurtured, but which ones we focus on is dependent on the time of year. Since we are heading into winter it is really important to emphasize grounding and centering ourselves by nurturing our earth element, which correlates in our bodies to our spleen and stomach. To nurture this element, we literally need to look to the ground for the source of our wellness. Eating lots of root vegetables is the best thing you can do for yourself right this second. Roasting potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, turnips, salsify and burdock are an exceptionally nutritious and comforting solution. I recommend roasting all root vegetables with a bit of coconut or olive oil and warming herbs like curry powder.
