Creative Books Highlight Gift Giving

I love to give gifts of all kinds, but this year, I made a point to find buy copies of the really fantastic that Leo and I love to pieces as gifts for his friends. Without books, I fear what life would look like and with all the video games dominating the wish lists this year, I pushed the latter to the side and stuck with the printed word as my route to making all the my children’s gifts resonant.
Most of the books are old releases, but there is one stand out that is current. No matter their date of publication, they are all equally good for very different reasons, but each one of them is extremely creative and will get your kids to think and feel outside of the box. They are books that you can read over and over again and never tire of. The last book on my list is my very favorite of the bunch because it is probably the most ingenious coloring book I’ve seen in over a decade. I love gifts that make you think, feel, enable you to participate with and above all, allow you to ENJOY yourself.
The Empty Pot is overflowing with integrity, heart and the importance of doing one’s best no matter who you are trying to please. The silver lining here is so magnificent I don’t want to spoil a thing. Leo and I have read so many times we’ve lost track but he counts it among his “favorites of all time.”
The Magic String is all about the LOVE. It casts you out among the stars and reels you back into your own bed with such a universal outlook on life, you can’t help but have a skipping party after reading it. At least that’s what Leo and I did.
Greg Foley inserted so many clever cultural references into this precious little book on friendship, it’s loads of fun to explain everything to your little ones. I even leaped up and grabbed a few choice items from my closet to show him what I meant. We both got a little teary eyed by the time we turned to the last page the power of the message had us hugging it out. I did pick up Mr. Foley’s second book, Willoughby & The Moon the other day, but Willoughby & The Lion is by far his finest work to date.
For me, this is the coloring book of the decade. Marion Deuchars has created a tome not to be missed. Each page sparks a new creative thought while highlighting the artist that ignited the movement in the first place. Leo and I love our copy so much, we take it with us whenever we leave the house with a box of colored pencils so there is never a dull moment, making the Nintendo DS a distant memory. At least for an hour.
