Helmut Newton

When I tried to think of some clever title for today’s post, every word that came after Helmut Newton’s name just seemed to cheapen the two that came before it, so I parsed my desire to get everything across in one full swoop and let the man and his name speak for itself. Helmut Newton is synonymous with photography, but the way in which he created this symbiosis was purely from his own world view: that women are the exception. His women are confident, irresistibly sexy and anything but inferior. He changed fashion photography forever by replacing the diminutive models of the 60′s and 70′s with his clever compositions of powerful women whose stares bore holes into the lenses of his cameras with their direct, lusty gazes. This exhibition was empowering, sublimely sophisticated and above all things, singly sexy. Thank god art is gluten free.

The show ends Sept. 25th, so if you are in the Houston area (or not) I’d do my best to hustle on down there to catch a glimpse of Helmut’s “first three groundbreaking books: White Women (1976) Sleepless Nights (1978 the year of my birth!!!!) and Big Nudes (1981)“, printed in the dimensions they were meant to be seen in. Trust me, the moment you leave the museum, you’ll immediately start Google searching for the nearest place to pick up a Polaroid camera.
