Rilke Bracelet

This bracelet was given to me as a Christmas present and I absolutely adore it. Wrought in sterling silver by the eminently talented Jeanine Payer, who inscribes her gold and silver creations with famous quotes and excerpts from some of the greatest minds, “in a scaled down version of her own script,” in her atelier in San Francisco. This particular piece reminds me of a hospital identification tag, but rather than have my physical information inscribed across the face of it, the facade is covered with the following poem by none other than Rainer Maria Rilke; making it a talisman that I carry with me, always.

“Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language.

Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them.

And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now.

Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.”

-Rainer Maria Rilke
